YOUR IV SEDATION RESOURCES

Information for every stage.

Find your forms, prepare for your visit and understand the standards and rights behind your care. If travelling from elsewhere in the ACT or nearby NSW, discuss arrival, your responsible adult/carer and recovery arrangements before making travel plans.

UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Sleep dentistry.
Twilight sedation explained.

Sedation dentistry describes dental care with sedation. “Sleep dentistry” and “twilight sedation” are common search terms, but they do not describe one fixed level of sedation. Our onsite service is IV sedation dentistry: medication is administered into a vein, with the depth of sedation planned and monitored by your anaesthetist.

Sedation differs from general anaesthesia. Your level of awareness can vary and complete sleep is not guaranteed. Local anaesthetic may also be used for your dental procedure.

Our specialist anaesthetist reviews your health, medications and proposed treatment before deciding whether this approach is appropriate. Sedation can affect breathing and circulation, so assessment, monitoring and recovery arrangements matter.

PLAN THE FINANCIAL SIDE

Sleep dentistry costs.
Your individual estimate.

If you are comparing sleep dentistry costs in Canberra, ask what each estimate includes. Your written financial information separates dental treatment, anaesthetist and facility fees. Our team discusses deposits, payment arrangements and applicable health-fund information before treatment.

Benefits depend on your policy, eligibility, procedure and insurer. Commonwealth hospital recognition does not guarantee a rebate or remove an out-of-pocket cost. Ask for your personal estimate before proceeding and read our fees and health-fund information.

Assessment first

Ask what your consultation includes and whether imaging or further assessment has a separate cost. Your final treatment plan may require further dental, specialist and anaesthetic review.

Know each part of the estimate

Review dental treatment, anaesthetist and facility fees separately. Ask how any deposit is credited, what remains payable and when payment is due.

Confirm before treatment

Review your written financial information and confirm any health-fund benefits with your insurer. Ask our team about payment and booking conditions before proceeding.

YOUR QUESTIONS

A clearer next step.

I feel embarrassed or anxious about seeing a dentist.

You are welcome here. Tell us about your concerns when arranging your consultation. We listen without judgement and discuss suitable options with you; sedation is one assessed option.

Can I ask for more explanation before deciding?

Yes. Ask about your options, alternatives, risks, fees and what further assessment may be needed. Tell your team if you need information explained differently or would like a support person involved in the discussion.

Is IV sedation available every day?

IV sedation is arranged on scheduled treatment days after dental and anaesthetic assessment. Call to discuss the next suitable consultation and treatment availability.

Can I have a normal dental appointment without sedation?

Yes. Professional general dentistry is a central part of A1 Dental Barton. Sedation is an additional assessed option, rather than a requirement for routine care.

Does sleep dentistry mean I will be completely asleep?

Complete sleep is not guaranteed. Your anaesthetist will explain the intended sedation level, what you may experience and the risks and alternatives relevant to you.

What should I bring to my first discussion?

Have your medication list, medical history and any relevant referral or dental information available. Tell us about your concerns so we can plan the consultation.

Can I return to work after IV sedation?

Plan time away from work and driving according to the instructions from your anaesthetic team. Arrange the required responsible adult/carer and discuss your work or caring commitments during assessment. Your team will provide guidance for your procedure and recovery.

Can I book a sedation procedure straight away?

Start by calling for an assessment. The dental and anaesthetic teams need to review your health, proposed treatment and suitability before a sedation procedure is confirmed. Online general dental appointments remain available.

Where does treatment take place?

All assessment and treatment take place at our single Barton facility in Canberra. See our ACT and regional patient information and plan directions and parking. Discuss your individual travel, escort and recovery arrangements with our team before booking travel.
